She is a life long El Centro resident who has been involved in our community in many ways. She is currently the president for MANA De Imperial Valley, she is the treasurer for Vo Neighborhood Medical Clinic among other things. Growing up she remembers her father working for the City of El Centro and how he wore his orange uniform shirt with pride. Her brother was also a city council member for the City of El Centro in the past so she has some history in serving the City of El Centro.  Despite the hard times ahead she feels like she’s ready to lead the city of El Centro get past these hard times.  Like every city in the valley the downtown area in El Centro needs some help and Martha would like to revitalize it and bring some life to it. Episode 108 – Margarita Magallanes

In today’s Episode I had the opportunity to talk to one of the candidates for board of trustees for the Calexico Unified School District, Ms Margarita Magallanes.  She’s running for one of the two spots available and she’s running against two incumbent candidates to be part of this all male board.  Margarita grew up and went to a couple of Calexico Unified School District’s schools but like so many of the kids in our community she was the daughter of migrant workers so she moved a lot during her teenage years following “la corrida” with her mom.  After high school she set her mind on opening her own business because she wanted to be her own boss so she could spend time with her daughters.  Margarita has 4 daughters who all go to school in Calexico.  This is one of the main reasons she decided to run, she wanted a better future for her daughters and the other kids in Calexico. Something that Margarita mentioned to me that she forgot to mention on the Podcast was that she wants to make sure our kids know how to speak English and another language well, most of us feel like we know Spanish but she wants to make sure our kids know how to speak and write it the correct way.  Margarita feels that some of the things she’ll bring to the board is her motherly instincts, her knowledge in finance and book keeping and her willingness to learn and do what’s best for our kids and our community. Follow Margarita’s campaign on Facebook and Instagram!  Just a reminder that this Episode is not an endorsement, it’s just an opportunity for you the community to get to know the candidates.  Episode 108 with Margarita Magallanes is now live on Anchor, Spotify, Google Podcast and Apple Podcast.  You can also watch this and other episodes on our YouTube channel! Episode 107 – JB Hamby

My guest for Episode 107 is a returning guest … candidate for IID board of directors division II, JB Hamby. The last time we spoke was 50 episodes back and also back in November of 2019, so it’s obvious that a lot has happened and changed since we last spoke. In this episode we didn’t talk about who JB is or his campaign platform like we normally do, but if you want to learn more about JB and his campaign platform you can go back and listen to Episode 57. Something that I’ve learned about JB since the first time we met back in the Upspace days, was that he’s someone that enjoys learning and goes all in when he starts a new project. Since our conversation back in November I’ve become more aware of the things happening at the IID and our water. We often see the IID as the place who brings power to our home and employs some of our friends and family, but I feel like we often neglect the importance of water, because without water there is no IID, no power and no jobs. This episode is not an endorsement it’s an opportunity for you the listener to get to know the candidate. Make sure you vote this upcoming November! You can not listen to Episode 107 with JB Hamby on Anchor, Spotify, Google Podcast and Apple Podcast. You can also other episodes on our YouTube Channel!

Episode 106 – Javier Moreno

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to talk to one of the candidates for Calexico City Council, Javier Moreno. He’s a life long Calexico resident, a retired police officer and he’s also been part of the board of directors for the Calexico Wellness Center. I asked Javier what he thought of the current situation in Calexico in terms of the council, their decisions and indecision, our water quality, transparency in politics and what are some of the troubles he sees in our future due the pandemic and what are some of the solutions he has in mind. You can now listen to Episode 106 with Javier Moreno on Anchor, Spotify, Google Podcast and Apple Podcast. You can also watch past episodes on our YouTube Channel!

Episode 196 – Martin Arellano Jr. – TacoMex Que Pasa Calexico

If you grew up in the 90's and early 2000's here in Calexico you probably remember the name TacoMex. The Arellano's and their food have been a staple in our community since 1992 when they first opened TacoMex. For most people who are in the restaurant business they know that owning a restaurant is a family affair and most of the time the younger members of the family end up hating it and don't see it as a future career, but not for Martin Arellano Jr. After being away for a while and running 3 successful food trucks in the San Antonio area he's come back to help his parents with Birria Red but only with one condition, if they let him bring back TacoMex to life and after having a successful soft open this past weekend the future looks bright for this new TacoMex era! Episode 105 – Ramon Castro

In today’s episode I got to chat with Ramon Castro. This wasn’t our first time meeting, Ramon is a fellow podcaster along with his friends Raymond and Ernie they host the Blue Falcon Krew podcast where they talk to and about our local veterans. Helping our local veterans is one of the many things Ramon does for our community. In my chat with Ramon I was able to see the many other things he does not only for Brawley but for the Imperial Valley. This isn’t Ramon’s 1st rodeo and I feel that shows a lot to his commitment to his community and city. This post is not an endorsement just an opportunity to get to know Ramon just like I did and see if he’s the candidate for the city of Brawley. Episode 69 – Ryan Childers

Back in late February right before the pandemic hit I had the opportunity to talk to Ryan Childers who is running for the IID board of directors for division 2.  Back when we recorded episode 69 he was running against three other candidates Dilda McFadden, JB Hamby and the incumbent Mr Bruce Khun.  Ultimately JB Hamby and Ryan Childers ended up being the top 2 vote getters and are now running.  Mr Childers is a lifelong resident of the Imperial Valley, El Centro to be exact, he’s also been a part of the El Centro Union High School District board of trustees.  You can listen to episode 69 and learn more about who Mr Ryan Childers is and why he thinks he’s the best candidate for IID board of directors division 2.  This is not an endorsement, just an opportunity for you get to know the candidate.   Episode 69 is available on Anchor, Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and many other platforms.

Episode 104 – Lewis Pacheco

Today I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with a life long Calexico resident, educator and two time city council member who is running for his third.  We talked a little bit about his history in Calexico as a citizen and also being involved in Calexico’s educational system.  Due to the fact that he’s currently part of the city council we were able to talk about some of the issues affecting out community and get some of his thoughts on some of the decisions or hold backs the city and the council has been part of.  Mr Pacheco is not on social media so I can’t share his links hopefully he’ll come around to it soon. Just a reminder this episode or post is not an endorsement, my goal is for you the audience to get to know the candidate and help you make a better decision come election day, quepasacalexico@gmail.com ! Today’s guest is one of the candidates for the El Centro Elementary School District School Board, Andrew Arevalo. Besides being a candidate Andrew is also a 4th teacher at McCabe Elementary, he has a long history of educators in his family, he’s taught for 6 years and in 2019 he was named CUE’s Emerging Teacher of the Year. These are just some of the things Andrew has been able to accomplish in his short 6 years of teaching, but something I noticed was that he’s always thinking on how help out his students. Besides talking about some of his accomplishments we also talked about what are some of his goals if elected and why he’s the right candidate. This episode is not an endorsement, its just an opportunity for you the listener to get to know the candidate and maybe help you make a better decision come November 3rd.
